Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal toward Spectators
The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.
Offseason Issues and Media Attention
The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team traded star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in building the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its recent title shortcomings.
